Student Design Competition Awards

Dr. Tam and CEE faculty provided mentorship, supervision, and consultation to sophomore, junior and senior design students in the following awards and grants. These projects have also provided numerous opportunities to students at all levels to gain research experience and networking opportunities, including freshman students. 2011 WERC competition, First place award ($2,500) and Terry McManus Outstanding Student Award ($750)

Project title: Effect of magnetic fields on ionic solutions
UCR Team achieves historic high scores for combined written paper, oral presentation, poster presentation and bench-scale prototype demonstration in the 21-year history of the WERC competition.

2011 Hydrogen Student Design Contest - Honorable Mention Award

A team of UCR students placed second and received an Honorable Mention Award in competition with an international field of 54 universities from 19 countries in their design for a residential hydrogen fueling system. The winning team included chemical engineering students of Marcus Chiu, Christian Contreras, Joon-Book Lee and Jason Skovgard and a MBA student, Joshua Goins.

2011 American Public Power Association - Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (APPA-DEED); Student Research Internship grants ($4K/award)


Two teams of UCR students have each won the APPA-DEED awards for their proposed research in energy-efficient research developments. Only ten awards are given out each year across the nation. The proposed work will be done in collaboration with the Riverside Public Utilities agency.

Project 1:Grid-independent Electricity Generation for Remote Areas based on a Unitized Regenerative Hydroxide Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell System.
Awardees: Marcus Chiu, Christian Contreras, Joon-Bok Lee and Jason Skovgard.

Project 2: Converting Campus Waste Streams into Locally Used Energy Products through Steam Hydrogasification and Methane Reformation.
Awardees: Michael Bagtang, Phillip Brendecke, and Stephanie Stasiuk.
